Next to the Ocean

Bachelor/Master/PhD students under one roof at Röda Sten Konsthall.

Next to the Ocean at Röda Sten Konsthall is an exam exhibition with twenty six students in photography at Valand Academy, Gothenburg University.

The photographic education at Valand Academy is Sweden’s only complete milieu, ranging from undergraduate and postgraduate education to artistic research.

The exhibition takes a new view on how exam exhibitions operate and shows the Bachelor-, Master- and PhD- in photography at the Academy Valand under one roof. The exhibition gives an overview of what is happening in young contemporary photography in Sweden. Using different modes of expressions, the width of the exhibition reflects concerns and interests of photographers today.

In connection with Next to the Ocean, two publications is published containing images and texts from the exhibiting photographers and artists, doctoral students, researchers and teachers at the program. Together, these photographic projects and texts form a progress report that visualizes the interests, techniques, practitioners and questions that shape today’s photography.

Aissa Lopez

ENGLISH Lopez considers how the home, as the background, or set, of our everyday lives can become loaded with meaning. She is interested in the ability of places to retain memory and the stories we tell ourselves. The work is a reinterpretation of past places, a reconstruction, revisualisation and re-remembering of spaces known to the artist. She uses the uncanny to express how the familiar is inhabited by the unfamiliar, how the ordinary can be transformed into the unsettling, strange or eerie. How spaces can hold potentialities, a tension within/between an unknown activity. Her work expresses a view of the uncanny as ambivalent in nature, it seduces not only repels.

Anne Broe Kristensen

ENGLISH Within my work, I am trying to evoke that meditative feeling where you simply just lose yourself in looking. Disappearing into a fragment of a longer notion of a melody without having to stop– In this context photography holds its’ greatest values for me. I experience photography as an additive process – each new image expanding on the already existing entity of the work. The process is both linear and cyclical, the images themselves being the project. The focus is the ambivalence between the body as a physical shell as opposed to a container of our emotions and inner life. The tension and interface between our external and internal landscapes. Snippets and repeated passages – corners and alleys of our dreams and the subconscious.

Ekaterina Lukoshkova

ENGLISH Ekaterina Lukoshkova focuses on representations of Russia and her experience of migrating to Sweden. The literal translation of “Sputnik TV” is “Satellite TV”, but the word “sputnik” also has another meaning: “companion”. In this work, Lukoshkova examines the relation and communication pathway between citizens and state power.

Emanuel Cederqvist

ENGLISH I’ve been walking in Sarek National Park several times now. The photographs in this project are from these journeys. The work also consists of images from a 100-year-old archive taken by Axel Hamberg. Walking in Sarek is to be exposed to a risk while having to be open to the unpredictable, perhaps that’s why hiking appeals to me. When I went through Hamberg’s archive this summer, I noticed that we had not only been to the same places, but had sometimes even taken the same pictures.Sarek as a landscape has not changed significantly since the Ice Age. Thus, the dislocation in time between our photographs is almost invisible. The only things that have changed are the camera and our various positions in the landscape.

Heikki Kaski

ENGLISH The Daddy Cool project raises questions about how the subjective image of a close relative can be re-examined in the encounter with other people’s experiences of the same person. The work has taken a long time to implement and resulted in unexpected twists. The boundary between fiction and reality occasionally dissolves. Questions about representation and ethics have been a part of the process as well as playfulness and humor. The choice of subject made me aware of other artists who work in the same field; with family members in front of the camera lens. It is important for me to balance the fine line between the personal and the private where the story becomes accessible to anyone but at the same time describes a subjective experience.

Minh Ngoc Nguyen

ENGLISH The work explores the playing field and boundaries between analogue photographs and computer-generated imagery. The images depict functional urban objects and other manufactured components that aim to provoke a sense of confabulation between the actual and artificial. While some photographs are manipulated or digitally generated, others are untouched to further question the conventions of conscious alteration within and outside the medium.

Noora Lehtovuori

ENGLISH Noora Lehtovuori finds inspiration in the mundane of the everyday, the absurd, the surreal way that we simply exist in the world. Her ideas take shape by questioning the norms and habits that we seem to naturally adapt. The projects leave room for my own failures and use humour when observing a societal annoyance. She begin by translating that observation into a physical form. Lehtovuori thinks of her work and ideas as multilayered. Her media varies from still photography to installation, film, sound and text. Her two video work in Röda Sten are focusing on mouth and they deal with issues of identity, touch and language.

Sean Gardiner

Title: Talking to a Horse

ENGLISH Sean Gardiner’s practice draws on personal experience of place, often combining interests in landscape, ecology, and the subjective nature of perception to explore larger environmental themes and the role that images play in shaping our understanding of them. Talking to a Horse consists of an archive of photographs – essentially snapshots documenting a walk at night – made during a period when the artist was experiencing the death of a relative. The inability for a photograph to translate the context of its creation functions as a basis for the work, which suggests that any attempt to represent a past reality is to construct versions of it.
